Prior to 1990, agriculture (primary production) accounted for 15% of GDP and employed 24% of the labour force. Although this share had increased to 26% of GDP, data in reality, output was only 92% of the 1990 level, underlining the extent to which GDP had declined as a consequence of UN imposed trade embargoes of the 1990's.
- The rural population, at 1.3 million, is 17% of the Serbian total and the number of these economically active within agriculture is 0.6 million.
- The total area of agricultural land exceeds 5 million hectares with 85% of land ownership belonging to private farms.
- The agribusiness sector accounted for 20.65% of total GDP and 40.91% of the manufacturing industry contribution to GDP for the same year.

- Serbia is one of the major raspberry producers in the world – having produced 75,000 tons in 2002.
- Prior to 1990 agriculture was a net exporter, but in 2002 agriculture only accounted for 2.5% of Serbian exports.
- After raspberries, which generated around €65 million in export business, mushrooms yielded €8.6 million, with Italy accounting for 76% of demand.
- Total revenues for the agribusiness sectors were ca. €3 billion of which 9% was derived from exports. The agribusiness sector accounted for 16% of Serbian exports.
- The agribusiness sector employed 154,712 people in 2002 - around 10.61% of the workforce in Serbia - within 3,269 enterprises.
- Within agribusiness, the average net monthly wage in 2003 was around €161.
- As can be witnessed within other important sectors to the Serbian economy, the educational qualifications profile is also very high within agribusiness given that over 10% of employees are either university or college graduates.
