Blessed with fertile soil and favourable climatic conditions, agriculture has always been an important component of the Serbian economy. Prior to 1990, primary agriculture accounted for 15% of GDP and 24% of the labour force. Triggered by UN imposed trade sanctions, there was a significant reduction in primary production output. However, this trend is not irreversible. Underlying capacity still exists to quickly ramp up volume, range and quality of products in parallel with EU norms - hence a lucrative investment opportunity for both international and domestic enterprises.
